Towards Mt. Kanin caves
Sun in the morning and evening, cloudy and rain in between

August 1, 2025, 40 pictures

The images, except for the portraits, where the vertical side measures 450 pixels, are mostly 768 by 1024 pixels in size, numbers in front of the picture descriptions are serial numbers of the original photo files. Made with participation of: Bogomir Remškar - Božo, Vladimir Levašov, Inna and Jurij (Jura) Artemenko, Denis Poliščuk - Den, Olena Ševčenko (Lena) and Łukasz Pasternak, Aleksander Kuzmenko - Kuzmič, Jana Bilinec (Yana Bilynets), Samo Milanič, Erika Kozamernik and Edi Benko, Boštjan Kuhelj. For greater accuracy Cyrillic names are transcribed into Latin according to Scientific transliteration of Cyrillic. The names of the cave parts are the author's.
The purpose of the excursion was to accompany cavers from Ukraine and Ajdovščina part of the way to Kanin, and, at the end, to take another look at the entrance to the Mala Boka cave.

Photos by the author of this report

55815. Sunrise over the Ljubljana Marshes, across the old Ljubljanica riverbed, from the road Podpeč - Notranje Gorice

55816. Mount Stenar, 2,244 m, from the road above Mojstrana. Its summit offers the most beautiful view of the Triglav North Face.

55817. View from the Predel pass towards the east, to the Julian Alps. On the left there is probably Razor, in the middle Triglav, on the right it could be Zadnjiški ozebnik

55843. View along the grassy runway of Bovec airport (in the direction of the WSW), where participants of the summer caving camp on Kanin from Ajdovščina gathered at eight in the morning. Why at the airport - according to the original plan, the equipment was supposed to be transported from here to Mt. Kanin by helicopter that morning, but the flight was canceled. It was necessary to switch to a backup plan via the C station of the Kanin cable car. The photo was taken in the afternoon, just before the rain.

55818. Morning view of the Bovec Basin and the mountains behind it from the B station of the Bovec - Kanin cable car, where Ukrainian cavers gathered.

55836. Two ox-eyes, Buphthalmum salicifolium, before the bend in the road from B station of the cable car to Krnica and C station, at an altitude of approximately 1130 meters above sea level. It is a place that can still be reached by low clearance vehicles. From here, two off-road vehicles took the participants and their luggage to station C. From station C, the equipment traveled to station D by chairlift (thanks to the cable car operators!), the cavers on foot. They carried the equipment from station D to the freight cable car station, and with it to the Peter Skalar Alpine Hut.

55830. Ajdovci, Ukrainians and a few guests gathered here, the leader of the mission to Kanin was Božo. He had nice mountain sandals (pictured), which have served him well for several years. The author did not manage to see them on his feet, because Božo had already changed into hiking boots in the meantime. He hadn't tied the shoelaces yet, until the real action he was more comfortable in untied ones.

55832. Božo like Božo, one and only

55838. Another view of the Bovec Basin

55840. The bend where the author turned back, in the background Mount Rogelj above Planina Krnica (1705 m)

55841. Above the gorge behind the bend, the Zipline Bovec runs - in the photo, one of the tourists is riding up.

55845. Shades of yellow and green on an acacia bush behind the parking lot on the northeast side of the bridge over the Boka River, just before it empties into the Soča. The other spent much time doing this and that, including lunch, and it was already a bit late to visit the entrance to Mala Boka. The author decided to start after a slightly longer shower, despite the fact that it continued with light rain.

55844. View from the bridge of the rather empty Boka River bed and of the funnel in the mountain where the Boka source is situated.

55869. The path to the source of the Boka and Mala Boka, a neighboring torrent a little further north, winds through the bushes along the north side of the Boka River bed to this fork. The wider left path continues to the source of the Boka, while the right, less pronounced one runs uphill towards Mala Boka. The author followed the left path in error.

55846. But when (after about hundred meters) this view of the Bovec Basin opened up, which is not to be seen from the path to Mala Boka, he knew he had missed it.

55847. Before returning back to the fork, he took this photo of the Boka riverbed and the bridge over it. Above right, Boka empties into the Soča.

55868. The path to Mala Boka crosses the ridge between the two torrents and turns towards the latter, through this stone gate.

55867. Soon the path descends to a stone barrier in the torrent bed.

55865. On the other side of the barrier, the path does not continue, so one has to continue left along the dry riverbed, even though there is no visible path. Soon the flat riverbed is followed by a steep step, at the top of which the entrance to the cave gapes. The wall on the right can be climbed by a rather "airy" via ferrata, made mostly of steel cable, and sometimes also of rope. At the end, via ferrata descends a few meters into the cave entrance.

55849. Close-up view from the cave to the entrance. The end of the via ferrata is visible above the author's hand.

55850. A wider view that covers the entire entrance, ...

55860. ... and the widest one, a little further from inside the cave, where a small window above the entrance is also seen.

55863. After a short gentle climb along the riverbed in the Entrance Hall, along the large rock in the photo ...

55853. ... a steeper slope follows, where a lovely, though rather worn out pink rope is used as support.

55855. Chamber in the middle of the previous picture, with a thin stream of water, ...

55857. ... and above it this kettle, full of such clean water that it can hardly be noticed.

55861. View from the path towards the top of the hall, the author preferred not to undertake the last climb, despite the inviting rope, along the hall back towards the entrance.

55864. View from the path to the cave to the south, above the Soča canyon

55870. Fringed pink, Dianthus superbus

VL60. The tow jeeps that brought the equipment and cavers to C station. In the background is D station (2202 m a.s.l.)

VL61. Rest in the rain - Łukasz. The tube at the top of the backpack is for emptying the Rasputica half siphon in Huevos.
