Velika Karlovica
Northeast Passage

October 1 to 12, 35 pictures

The images, except for the portrait, where the vertical side measures 450 pixels, are mostly 768 by 1024 pixels in size, numbers in front of the picture descriptions are serial numbers of the original photo files. The names of caves and their parts are sometimes the author's.
The purpose of the excursion on October 12 was to visit Velika Karlovica through the Main Entrance, and to get from Bukovčev rov (Bukovec Tunnel) to Blatna dvorana (the Mud Hall) through the Water Passage, by boat.

Pekel (Hell) Gorge near Borovnica, October 1

56094. Fire salamander, Salamandra salamandra, resting on the trail. The author has managed to pass without disturbing the animal.

56095. Rapids under the First Waterfall

56096. Another fire salamader. It moved to escape into the slope even before the author noticed it.

56097. Second Waterfall

56098. View of the hamlet of Pristava taken at the place, where from the path to the Fourth Waterfall a trail branches off along the steep and slippery slope. It leads back to below the Second Waterfall, bypassing the via ferrata and its wooden steps.

56099. Deciduous tree with a nicely intertwined trunk, along the bypass path

Jezerina, October 5

56106. View of the hills on the southern edge of Matarsko podolje, towards the sun

56107. The wet and not too cold weather attracted into the open another fire salamander.

56108. Cyclamen

56111. View of the interior of the first hall after the narrow passage. The cave continuation, a bit too steep for the author to tackle it alone, is in the first dark patch, center left.

56114. Another view of the stalagmite, shown on the left edge of the previous photo.

56116. A thin column, a fused stalactite and stalagmite

56118. The path in front of the cave entrance, where the descent from a small plateau starts.

56119. One more fire salamander, already at night.

Ljubljana Marshes, October 6

56120. Orange-purple clouds shortly after sunset, above the southwestern edge of the plain

Gorenja Brezovica. October 7th

56121. Fog rises like a light cloud from the meadows, view to the west.

56122. Eastern part of the village with rising fog on the slope of Mount Krim

56123. View from the southeast of the village, which descended back in the fog. In the foreground is the sawmill, where Mrs. Brancelj has been cooking Szeged goulash in the small kitchen since early morning.

Ponikve near Preserje

56126. View of one of the smallest intermittent lakes ...

56125. ... just before sunset

Rakitna, October 10

56127. From light green to dark green and sky blue

Slovenian Littoral, October 11

56134. The end of sunset, over the sea

Velika Karlovica, October 12

56136. Stones in the stream of Cerkniščica, against the sun, ...

56135. ... under a concrete barrier in Dolenja vas, passable for traffic at low water.

56137. Portrait of Martin Krpan, Slovenian national hero, made of linden wood by
Ivan Najger, framed in a processed fir stump overgrowth.

56138. View across the meadows and lake from the Cvinger viewpoint

56139. View from the cave entrance to the dry riverbed and the lake plain in the afternoon sun

56140. "False "snail" - the broken lower part of a stalagmite in the cave streambed, polished by water. The vertical length of the cross-section is approximately 20 cm.

56155. At the end of Bukovčev rov, the wide water tunnel narrows to just over two meters horizontally and vertically, behind it the boat has to be carried over the sandbank, and a larger water tunnel follows, depicted here.

56154. View down the tunnel, from the place where the author is sitting in the previous photo.

56149. View from the boat back along the wide, but increasingly lower tunnel, the rock slabs on the ceiling are at the height of the head.

56148. On this muddy bank one has to get off the boat...

56145. ... and to move forward with the boat just above the ground. The more you stick to the right side, the lower the ceiling, but the boots sink into the mud much less.

56143. View from the passage to the Mud Hall back along the tunnel. It is low, muddy, and very picturesque.

56156. View through the entrance to the cave to the outside, in the last breaths of the day. Auxiliary illumination was provided by the author's headlamp
