Side Access Tunnel, First impressions

January 22, 2025, 11 pictures

Most images are approximately 768 x 1024 pixels in size, numbers in front of the picture descriptions are serial numbers of the original photo files. Vladimir Levašov of Ljubljana Cave Exploration Society greatly contributed to this excursion. The names of parts of the cave are sometimes the author's.

The excursion was made possible by the Sežana Caving Society (Jamarsko društvo Sežana).

54823. View from the south to the cave entrance; there was a little fog, from which a light drizzle fell.

54824. View from the tunnel leading into the cave interior, at the bottom of the entrance pit. The foggy weather reduced the contrast between the interior lighting and the surface, allowing for a softer photo with more detail.

54828. The stalactite column above the floor of the Big Hall

54831. The white stalactite and the curtain along the south wall of the hall

54833. The purpose of the excursion was, in addition to the photo of the stalactite column, which was not entirely successful on the excursion on January 11th, to continue along the path back towards the entrance and take a few more photos there. Mainly of the more pronounced stalagmites. Both Jaka Jakofčič and Vladimir were very impressed with the picturesque and colorful Side Access Tunnel, so we went there instead. In the photo: crystal surface of a broken dripstone heap on the ascent to the Side Access Tunnel.

54834. Another version of the previous photo, where Vladimir, standing next to the tripod, wanted to use a hand-held flashlight to illuminate the cavity under the flowstone break. Since the flashlight had fixed optics, the beam of light was too wide and Vladimir therefore narrowed it with a slightly open palm. The color of this light was very warm and the program in the camera calculated the color temperature slightly off - to green.

VL45. How previous two photos were made. The photographer in the darkness of a large underground space, a floodlight to illuminate the subject on its left, at the end of a 3.65-meter-long folding pole, supported so that its tip was one meter from the wall. Folding poles were also used in the lighting of shots 54828 and 54831.

54835. A wall with calcite draperies at the end of an easily accessible part of the tunnel, view up. Cave continues above the curtains on the right side of the picture.

54836. View back into the Big Hall of the tunnel, with interwoven shades of white and gray-brown on the ceiling

54838. The most picturesque stalagmite pyramid at the end of the Big Hall in the tunnel

54840. The opulence of whites on the fortunately inaccessible high side balcony
